What is a Frame and Panel Door?

A Frame and Panel door consists of 5 separate pieces that are glued together to form a door: 2 rails, 2 stiles, and the panel. This type of assembly allows the panel to "float" within the frame to allow for seasonal expansion and contraction of wood. The rails are the horizontal members of the assembly and connect the stiles together at the top and bottom. The stiles are the vertical members of the assembly and are connected by the rails. The stiles and rails form a frame that contains the panel assembly. The panel assembly can be a flat panel or raised panel. The reveal is typically the dimension of the flat section from the outside of the assembly on the stile and rails to the inside of the stile and rails.
