What are the basic parts of a Wall Cabinet Carcass? The basic parts of a kitchen wall cabinet are the sides (2), the top (1), the bottom (1) and the back (1). Depending on the height of the cabinet the number of shelves will vary. In addition, depending on the width of the cabinet, there might be a center panel to add strength and to prevent the bottom from sagging with weight. The parts are usually made from some type of sheet good: plywood, mdf, composite, etc. The more expensive cabinets will be made from veneer core plywood that is 3/4" thick. Cheaper cabinets will have a 1/4" thick back panel with the addition of "hanging" rails (1/2" thick strips of plywood) that will strengthen the cabinet where it is attached to the walls. Again, the more expensive cabinets will have a 1/2" or 3/4" back which eliminates the need for the hanging rails. The back also serves to "square" the cabinet and helps prevent the entire cabinet from "racking" as it is installed. |
